Dandeli, the name is believed to be taken from the mythological forest of Dandakaranya, according to the Hindu mythology. Another legend has it that the name of Dandeli has been adopted from local deity – Dandelappa who lost his life in the name of loyalty to his masters – the Mirashi landlords.
The City and its Demography
Dandeli, the town is situated at an elevation of 1551 feet above sea-level and receives good rainfall in the backdrop of western ghats. The city has a population of just 53,000 (as per 2001 census) and males constitute 51 percent of the populace. At 74 percent, literacy rate is higher than the national average Dandeli.
The city also houses a large number of migrant workers from all over India. Migrants from north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh moved to this industrial town to look for a livelihood as this quaint town is known for paper mills. Besides Kannada, Hindi, Marathi and Konkani are also widely spoken in Dandeli. No wonder then, many term the city a “Mini India”.
